Sinkholes are among the least common types of damage that may occur to a Canadian home. As such, many homeowner insurance policies put them on their list of exclusions, or types of damage that are not covered by ordinary policies. In most cases it is possible to purchase supplementary coverage for sinkholes that can be added on top of a regular policy. It is always important to read your policy over carefully and be fully aware of what is covered and what is not.
Although there are many factors that may result in a sinkhole one of the more common ones is a change in groundwater properties (water flowing underneath the ground) that removes enough soil under your home that the area the home sits on is no longer strong or stable enough to support its weight. This tends to happen more often to homes that are built above limestone deposits.
It is possible to get geological and sinkhole information about your municipality from your city hall or other government offices. It is your right to consult help from experts outside of your insurance company in the event you are displeased with an offer you receive or a decision they have made.
