Landslide describes when rock, soil, mud, and everything embedded in it moves down a sloped area. Landslides can be caused by people and/or nature. Some examples of their causes are: melting snow, heavy rain, pit digging, use of explosives, earthquakes and even climate change. Sometimes landslides are slow-moving (as slow as a few centimetres a year). When this is the case it sometimes becomes apparent to people who observe the area because they can notice that upright standing objects like signposts and trees start tilting and looking strange. As well, landslides can be very fast-moving (with maximum speeds of 360 kilometres an hour). The fast moving variety has the power to displace or destroy entire buildings, including homes and businesses. Although this is one of the less common types of insurance claims these events are reported multiple times, each year, all across Canada.
The different types of avalanches or snow slides are loose snow, dry snow and wet snow avalanches. There are also wind, soft, hard and deep slab avalanches which also have their own characteristics. They are all caused by different types of events or disturbances. Like landslides they can be caused by natural occurrences and by human disturbances. The majority of avalanches or snow slides occur between December and April but they can happen any time.
Typically, landslides and snow slides fall into an area of insurance called ‘exclusions’, which means that they are not usually covered under ordinary comprehensive homeowner’s insurance policies. Often these exclusions can be covered by the purchase of an additional insurance plan that supplements the broader comprehensive one. In the event of any confusion, dispute, or dissatisfaction with an offer you receive from your company it is your right to consult an independent insurance expert for a second opinion.
